To Highpower shooters, Ohio is the home of Camp Perry, the largest outdoor rifle range in the world and the site of the US National Matches held annually in August. To many Highpower competitors Camp Perry is the ultimate outdoor range, the one which truly separates the best from second-best.
Numerous local clubs in Ohio offer Highpower matches, with some hosting Full course matches out to 600 yds and many smaller clubs offering reduced target matches out 300 yds. The ORPA hosts several matches during the year at Camp Perry which draw competitors from our neighbor states as well military teams who attend for the opportunity to practice at Camp Perry. The ORPA annually holds a highpower regional as well as one or two EIC matches. ORPA sponsored matches are weekend matches, with Saturdays reserved for full course 80 shot NRA matches and Sundays being used for 50 Shot team matches. For the past several years ORPA has also hosted John M. Garand matches for newer shooters concurrently with the Sunday team matches.
Ohio also hosts a match or two for the long-range Highpower shooters on Camp Perry's 1000 yd. Viale Range. The year 2001 will mark Ohio's first official NRA Regional Long Range Match which will be held in June. ORPA also enters several Long Range Teams during the National Matches in august. Junior programs are a big part of Highpower shooting with the ORPA for many years hosting the largest CMP Shooting Clinic in the country at Camp Perry, with attendance figures that approach the 500 mark. Ohio also provides support for a Junior Team at the NRA National Matches in August. Tryouts are Usually held in the spring of the year. Both the clinic and the junior team are supported by the Civilian Marksmanship Program, now headquartered at Camp Perry. The Junior Team has been supported for the past several years by Sierra Bullets.
