Cowboy Action Shooting
Cowboy Action Shooting is one of
fastest growing disciplines in the shooting sports.
Matches are designed around scenarios and firearms taken
from the historic period of the 'Old West' in the United
States.
Competition with Rifle, Shotgun and
Pistol is governed by the Single Action Shooting Society
(S.A.S.S.). Competition has the added facet of a living
history aspect. Competitors must choose a singular
'Nickname' and develop a costume and persona to use
during competition.
There are numerous categories in
which to compete for men, women and youth.
COWBOY ACTION SHOOTING
REPORT FOR 2011
The Ohio Rifle and Pistol Association continued to
promote and support Cowboy Action Shooting in Ohio
throughout 2011. ORPA was once again the Presenting
Sponsor of the 2011 Single Action Shooting Society (SASS)
Ohio State Cowboy Action Shooting Championships June
10-12. The competition is sponsored by the Miami Valley
Cowboys at the Piqua Fish and Game Hard Times facility.
Hard Times was built under the guidance of the NRA and
stresses safety by design.
The main match competition consisted of 10 stages over
two days and a 135 yard long-rifle range for side match
events. There was also a Wild Bunch match held the day
prior to the main match. The Ohio Rifle and Pistol
Association 2011 Cowboy Champions were: Junior Male
Horrible Hogan (Hogan DeLong); Adult Female
Angel Fire (Katie Schriewer); Adult Male Gaslight
(Marc Moralez); Senior Female Rose Louise Reasoner
(Karen Steiger) and Senior Male Smokin Iron
(Steve Mowery).
CAS is continuing to grow evidenced by the number of new
shooting venues and regular or recurring scheduled
matches. ORPA affiliated clubs Miami Rifle and Pistol
Club and Greene County Fish and Game Association have
become SASS affiliated. This allows them to list their
matches in the Cowboy Chronicle and on the
SASS website. Sandusky County Sportsmans Club in
Gibsonburg became affiliated with ORPA this year. A
listing of some of the current Ohio SASS affiliated clubs
and locations can be found at the web site: http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&time=&date=&ttype=&ie=UTF8&mrt=kmlkmz&om=0&msa=0&msid=116946767339224427232.0004447bf768ef2d3cd1e&ll=40.36513,-82.66954&spn=3.557325,7.404785&z=7.
One of the goals for 2012 could be to add more clubs and
locations to this map.
The highlight of the year in Ohio for Cowboys is Guns Of
August 10-14 August, the Midwest Regional shoot held at
the Middletown Sportsmans Club in Middletown Ohio.
The Big Irons Rangers sponsor this annual event and this
year over 200 CAS shooters from all over the US and
Canada were in attendance.
A sign of the times. One observation was the number of
participants at these two key events appeared to be down
by 25-30% over previous years. However the enthusiasm and
cowboy spirit was ever present. Thats the cowboy
way.
The Cowboy Action Shooters on the ORPA board continue to
recruit new ORPA members and grow the Association. Fletch
(Bill Knall), Grubsack (Bob Sacco), Mea Culpa (Mary
Sacco) and Slowpoke (Larry Dan Smith) represented ORPA at
the 2011 NRA Convention held in Pittsburgh.
